The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its presence.

But for me, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
