The Legendary Williams, 45, Receives Special Entry for First Melbourne Major in Five Years.

A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the summer season," Williams said. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the mark formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the first round at the venue in 2015.
