Pacific Bluefin Tuna Fetches Historic Bid of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital Auction
A substantial bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; ÂŁ2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.
The successful bid for the 535-pound fish was placed by the company of a popular sushi chain, which manages outlets throughout Japan and internationally.
"The first tuna brings good luck," commented the entrepreneur, a regular participant at the yearly new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Past
Following the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared in no time."
This most recent purchase surpasses his previous historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to surpass his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its locations throughout the country.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one satisfied patron.
