Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the deceased director Rob Reiner, who directed her in the beloved rom-com When Harry Met Sally.

A Tragic Discovery

Reiner was discovered deceased alongside his spouse, Michele Singer Reiner, at their Los Angeles home at the weekend.

“Oh how we will miss this man…” Ryan wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture of them together. “Thank you, Rob and Michelle [sic], for the way you believe in true love, in fairy tales, and in laughter. Thank you for your faith in the best in people, and for your profound love of our country.”

Legal Proceedings Unfold

Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being held without bail. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy was the one who located her father.

“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan continued. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

Children Share Their Grief

Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “Language fails to capture the daily agony we endure,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. Beyond being our mom and dad, they were our dearest friends.”

Peers Pay Their Respects

Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner via comments shared yesterday together with remarks by Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.

“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the tribute noted. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. Everyone felt like part of a crew. His direction was a gift, but his legacy is broader.”

A Lasting Cinematic Legacy

When Harry Met Sally was a critical and commercial success in 1989, making over $93m at the box office and securing Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.

Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.

Reiner’s celebrated filmography featured classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were husband and wife for over three decades.
