Mikel Arteta Warns Fitness Woes Could Undermine Arsenal's Trophy Quest
Arsenal's manager has voiced fears that his team's pursuit for titles this season is being jeopardized by a worrying circle of fitness setbacks and a grueling fixture list.
Fresh Squad Update
Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the Champions League clash to Belgium due to illness. Meanwhile, attacker Leandro Trossard and defender William Saliba are still unavailable.
There was, however, positive news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker added to their European squad. He comes in for the injured youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an foot injury.
"Training, no because we don't have time to train. But clearly the fact that you are without players, you are placing demands on other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a truly vicious cycle."
Dowman's issue is the latest in a extensive list of fitness problems for the North London side. Since the beginning of last season, they have recorded 95 injuries, the second-most total in the Premier League.
Extended Absentees
- Defenders Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhães are unlikely to be back until the new year.
- Midfielder Kai Havertz continues to rehabilitate from surgery and "requires more time," according to the manager.
Arteta dismissed the suggestion that practice intensity were to culprit, citing a shortage of opportunity for sessions. He highlighted the pressure on available players, some of whom have featured over 150 matches in two seasons.
Recruitment Strategy
Even after a major summer spend over £250 million, Arteta insisted the team is unlikely looking to dip into the winter recruitment market.
"At the moment we're just concentrating on bringing the players back and hopefully it will be a matter of weeks," he commented. "We know how important those weeks are going to be."
Looking Ahead
The squad experienced their first defeat in 18 matches at the weekend, cutting their lead at the summit of the league to two clear points.
Focus now shifts to the Champions League, where a sixth consecutive group win would all but guarantee a knockout phase finish. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could create history by finding the net in a fifth straight successive Champions League fixture.
"The team is disappointed with the outcome, but we have to move forward," he stated. "It's not like all is going badly because we lost one game. So we remain united."
