Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
