A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the site and a third person who escaped following the explosion was found not long after. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member caused the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
