We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
