Citizens have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will not create a threat to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance provision
  • After-conflict governance of the region

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, mourners came together to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"When the night falls, the anxiety comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said another two victims had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, medics stated.
