Social Media Content Creators Fueling Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Medical Experts Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Some professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Operations

Research also found groups with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Item Information and Pricing

Inside these communities, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, mixed at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet approved
may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
