Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
