Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins After Recent Arrests
Miami recorded eighty-six opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat earned a crushing 146-114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was additionally detained as part of a extensive federal investigation into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
However, the Heat were focused as they scored 86 first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later said Terry had the support of the team.
"We support him. Full support," Bam stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."
The Trail Blazers also won their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the squad to a convincing 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Addressing the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated that situation and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
